Railroad History and Folklore in Glacier National Park
July 8, 2009
Instructor: Bill Taylor, M.A.

The railroad played a crucial role in the development of Glacier National Park. Many aspects of that development can still be enjoyed today. During this course, we will explore the railroad’s history, viewing many of the remaining examples of their legacy, and learn about the railroad’s continuing role as a Park neighbor.

Meeting Time: Wednesday, July 8th at 7:45 AM.

Meeting Place: Belton Railroad Depot (also the Glacier Natural History Association). Travel on Highway 2 toward West Glacier. The depot is on the north side of the highway directly across from a Conoco gas station just past the turnoff for West Glacier and Glacier National Park.

Accommodations: Students who wish to stay at Field Camp the nights before or after their course can reserve a spot by calling the Glacier Institute. See Field Camp description for facility information.

Food: Bring a sack lunch, snacks and plenty of water.

Equipment: Please see basic gear list.

Physical Requirements: We will be riding the train and then walking around our multiple stops along the way.

Transportation: We will be traveling on Amtrak’s Empire builder line to East Glacier and returning to West Glacier in a Glacier Institute Van.

Weather: This course will not be canceled due to weather.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation...

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation will provide a $500,000 gift over five years for Glacier National Park's 100th anniversary in 2010, officials said Monday. Jane Ratzlaff, executive director of the Glacier National Park Fund said “We are ecstatic over this wonderful gift.” The Glacier Park Fund hopes to raise $3.5 million for the 100th Anniversary. The railroads gift is 1/7th of the total goal.

The Park has always had an amazing relationship with Glacier National Park all the way back to James J. Hill, the primary promoter for the park 100 years ago.
